In 2013, we completed an installation project in Austin, Texas, where we had to increase the bottle capacity of the client’s existing racking. The first time that we worked on this project was in 2008. The wine room could store 1,100 bottles then.
We needed to double the size of the wine cellar to accommodate the owner’s growing collection. The owner also loves to buy standard and large format bottles, so we had to combine different racking configurations for various bottle sizes.
After the second installation, this residential wine cellar could now store and display 1, 624 bottles.
Innovative Custom Wine Cellar Design for a High-End Home in Austin
Most elements in the home were built with wood and glass. The material used for the cabinetry and furniture was Sapele Mahogany. The color of this wood species ranges from medium to reddish-brown. It has grain patterns that become more attractive when stained.
The owner wanted their wine racks to be of the same tone and material to match the woodwork in their home. The architect and contractor of the home gave us a palette to achieve this.
Another characteristic of Sapele Mahogany that makes it widely used in wine rack construction is its stability and durability. It was a perfect wood choice because the client wanted a scent-free wine cellar.
Elevation 1
The right wall as you enter the wine room is Elevation 1. The top section consists of single storage racks. We provided an area where we concealed the wine cooling evaporator in a VC-style cover.
For bulk storage, we added diamond bins in the middle section that stores the bottles on top of each other. Nine bottles can be stored in each opening.
We created a wider wine storage area by opening a couple of spaces below the diamond bin wine racks. We added coved trays, which are intended for 9-liter bottles. We created two cascading heights in each opening to allow for a clear view of the wine labels.
We installed an LED lighting fixture above this area. We usually recommend this type of lighting to our customers because it illuminates the bottles dramatically without emitting too much heat.
Although known to be more expensive than regular bulbs, LED lights can cost you less money in the long run because they have a longer lifespan and consume less energy.
Elevation 2
As you move on to the next area of this Austin home wine cellar, the racking on the left wall is 8 ¼ inches deep. We installed horizontal wine racks at the top and bottom sections, which can accommodate standard and large format bottles.
The client stores his mini car collection and other wine cellar accessories, like decanters, in the middle section of Elevation 2. We installed the lighting and mirror at the back of this racking to add character to the wine display area.
Elevation 3
The next wall originally had twelve coved trays and six solid backs. We added new sections for individual storage and custom cabinets with scalloped neck supports.
The racking can now accommodate 384 bottles in single storage openings and 34 bottles in the custom cabinets.
We installed large steel supports under the double-deep Sapele Mahogany shelf. This will make the racking more stable for bearing the heavyweight of the cabinetry.
We utilized the space below the shelf for the client’s boxes filled with wines. He usually buys wines in bulk. He did not want to stack the boxes in the front area which would affect the tidiness of his Austin home wine cellar. With this feature, he could just slide the boxes directly under the shelf with ease.
Elevations 4 and 5
The racking in Elevation 4 was designed for 96 magnum bottles. We provided another area for the evaporator at the top section, which was hidden in a VC-style cover.
After adding new sections to the racking in Elevation 5, there are now individual wine racks for 288 bottles, 16 coved trays, and custom cabinets for 26 bottles.
Rolling Ladder for Convenience
At Custom Wine Cellars Austin, one of the factors that we always consider when designing a wine cellar is the convenience of accessing the wines. We want our customers to enjoy grabbing a bottle of wine even in hard-to-reach areas of the racking.
In this installation project, the height of the ceiling was more than 10 feet, so we needed to add a hook rolling ladder. This type of ladder was designed to slide along the rail attached to the wooden wine racks. If you want to transfer it to a different wall in the cellar, it can be lifted with ease.
