Beautiful Modern Home Wine Cellar Built Under the Stairs
Building a modern home wine cellar could be challenging. The main obstacle is primarily space. Where do you build it in your home? This situation is typical of homes where the construction of the wine cellar was initiated in a preexisting house. But space will not stop you from building your dream wine cellar. The Custom Wine Cellars Austin team did just that for this client. This client had an unused space under his stairs. So, the team converted the unused area to a wine room where the client could store and savor his wines.
The stair conversion in this home was successful. This wine cellar looks modern and posh. It has an abundance of straight lines but still has a minimalist approach in its overall design. The glass panels enclosing the wine room look phenomenal. Modern metal wine racking completes the contemporary feel of the wine cellar.
Modern Home Wine Cellar with Contemporary Metal Wine Racking
Any modern home wine cellar wouldn’t be complete without metal wine racking. For this wine cellar, the team used ½ inch metal rods were the racking system. It has a glossy finish with dark-stained Alderwood on panels connecting each section of the racking system. The dark stain of the Alderwood blends well with the metallic parts of the wine racks. It appears metallic due to the unique ability of Alderwood to imitate metals when the right stain is applied.
Placement of the Metal Wine Racking in the Wine Room
There are predominantly horizontal racks in this glass wine cellar. Sandwiched between layers of horizontal racks were reveal rows, lit by LED strip lighting. Then on the ends of the racking system are wine shelves with white acrylic LED panels underneath. And below the racking system is the area for unopened wine cases. And at the center of the wine cellar, there’s a tasting table where the client can decant his wines or store larger bottles. That wine shelf also has a white acrylic panel with LED lighting.
The overall design of the racking system prioritizes showing wine labels. It was also built for easy bottle retrieval and organizing. And for ease of access of the client, the horizontal racks were kept at three bottles deep. Three-bottle-deep racking is enough to store the client’s impressive wine collection. Going beyond that would make reaching the innermost bottles difficult and inconvenient.
Subtle LED Lighting Inside the Modern Home Wine Cellar
LED lighting was also installed to highlight the bottle labels. This type of lighting enhances the presentation of the wine collection. LED lighting doesn’t affect temperature or humidity, or emit any harmful radiation that could harm the quality of the wine in the cellar.
The metal wine racking already looks elegant as it is. But, with the LED lighting added, the wine cellar looks even more gorgeous. The team installed LED strips on channels within the metal wine racks. The team also installed LED lighting for the white acrylic panels strategically placed throughout the wine cellar.
Cooling System for the Beautiful Home Wine Cellar Under the Stairs
For this glass wine cellar project, the Custom Wine Cellars Austin team installed an RM4600 cooling unit, an industrial-grade split-type cooling system from US Cellars Systems. Amazingly, this cooling system produces zero to minimal noise inside the wine cellar. And you won’t find any visible parts of the refrigeration unit in this wine room either, aside from the vent protruding from the soffit on the ceiling.
As a split-type cooling unit, the RM4600 primarily has two major parts: the condensing unit and the evaporating unit. The team placed the condensing unit outside of the room. While on the other hand, the evaporator was placed inside the soffit above the ceiling. The ducting system for the coils and electricals was also placed inside the soffit. This clean approach in the placement of the cooling unit parts removes clutter and unsightly mechanical parts in the wine cellar.
Luxurious Glass Panels for the Doors of the Modern Home Wine Cellar
The glass doors add sophistication and pique visitors’ curiosity to the modern home wine cellar of the client. You can see the beautiful metal racking and subtle LED wine cellar lighting outside the glass wine cellar. The 5-foot metallic pole for the door handle is another fantastic and minimalist piece of the glass door.
Aside from aesthetics, the glass panels are functional in maintaining the optimum temperature and humidity for the wine cellar. These glass panels are half-inch tempered glass that helps insulate the wine room from the fluctuating temperature outside. It has pivot hinges that work well in sealing the wine cellar. The self-closing mechanism of the glass doors ensures that the wine cellar will be closed and sealed every time someone gets in and out.
