Ramp Up Your Old Enfield Home with Sensational Custom Glass Wine Cellars
Texas comes with some of the most beautiful custom glass wine cellars. And as one of the top 5 wine-producing states in the country, it’s no wonder why homes like yours have some of the most unique and highly valuable craft wines! But what happens to a prized wine collection if it’s not stored under the right conditions? That could be an expensive disaster!
In this article, we’re here to show you an incredible wine cellar project complete with the right functionality and incredible design. Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, one of the country’s most trusted custom glass wine cellar builders, created this unconventional wine room as the perfect backdrop for a dining area.
Conceptualizing Custom Glass Wine Cellars Like This One
Contemporary wine cellars can be custom-made to any shape and size, design, color, and theme. The best thing about customizing glass wine cellars is you get to be in the driver’s seat. You can get your wine cellar to look exactly like you want it to be, and we’ll help you choose from your options regarding the wine cellar lighting, racking, tables, doors, and more!
When it comes to modern or contemporary glass wine cellars, the typical inclination is to use all modern materials like glass and metal. However, when you work with experts like Coastal Custom Glass Wine Cellars, you can expect the unexpected because every modern glass wine cellar is designed unlike any other. Like this glass custom wine cellar, they interfused wood, metal, and glass to come up with an extraordinary contemporary wine cellar design. Every component you see in this wine closet is custom-made, from the walls to the racks, doors, lighting, and flooring.
The primary condition was to create a wine storage area that harmonized with the home’s stately interior. If you browse through the photos, this glass home wine cellar is in a dining area dressed in neutrals like ivory and dark brown. A giant indoor plant provides a subtle pop of color in the corner. Since the goal was to make the wine cellar a centerpiece that makes heads turn, the team chose a color theme with a darker contrast. Hence, the black metal wine racking and dark brown wooden shelf. The contrast spilled over the entire dining room, making it more relaxed. Just picture yourself enjoying a plate of your favorite dish here with a side of your favorite Reisling, Rosae, or Chardonnay — that’s a luxury unlike not many!
An All-Powerful Wine Cooling System with Zero Buzz
This custom glass wine cellar was already being constructed before the Coastal team was brought in. The problem was a couple of flaws in the workmanship and technical choices of the original contractor. So Steve and his team had to demolish everything and redo the entire cellar.
The studs and joists were put up first, followed by the line set for the wine cellar cooling system. The cooling system regulating the temperature of this glass wine cellar is the HS 8600 from US Cellars Systems, one of the industry’s most trusted cooling system providers for wine cellars.
The HS 8600 is a variant of the brand’s High Static Cooling Series focused on cooling medium to high-temperature rooms. Yes, your wine cellar cooling system will depend on the ambient temperature of your Old Enfield home. The HS 8600 is a ducted, split system where the coils run from the ceiling to the adjacent mechanical room, and the condenser is set outside the house.
What’s great about split-system units is they don’t take up space, unlike self-contained cooling units, and they operate with little to no sound. When you step into the cellar, you won’t sense the cooling unit unless you look up the ceiling and see the two registers (for air inflow and return). The HS 8600 comes with rust-proof aluminum housing and an expansion valve that automatically regulates the humidity, protecting the entire machine for the long run.
See-Through Glass Wine Cellar Doors for the Head-Turning Wine Cellar
To maximize the visibility of this modern wine room and the owner’s wine collection inside, we installed glass wine cellar doors with aluminum framing. Glass panels used in wine cellars should be at least ½-inch thick.
If you’re located in cooler regions, the single-paned glass will suffice for a wine cellar. However, if you’re located in an area where summer temperatures reach extreme levels, double-paned glass would be a better option. Some experts even recommend injecting Argon between the two glass panes to enhance the panel’s insulation capacity. For this wine cellar’s glass door, the team used dual-paned glass that’s 1”-thick in total.
Speaking of insulation, this gargantuan glass door was insulated on the sides with spray foam. This is one way to seal air gaps between the door and jamb. You can also explore attaching weather stripping, but it would be best to consult your wine cellar specialist
Dual-Themed Wine Cellar Racking Design With a Propped-Up Feature
After installing the insulation, cooling system, drywall, and other electricals, it was time to put up the wine cellar racking. To produce that dark touch to the design, the team customized wooden wine shelves from Alder wood. The wood was coated with a rustic color and polished with the usual lacquer coating.
Racks were installed on all three sides of this custom glass wine cellar, and one can see all the wooden shelves and the metal wine racks. The topmost portion of the wooden shelves is occupied by a wine reveal row built with an under-cabinet light valance — a molding used to conceal under-cabinet lighting.
For the metal wine racks, the team went with VintageView’s triple-deep metal wine racks in matte black (also called W-series racks). As the name suggests, one pair of rods can hold three standard-sized wine bottles (750ml). Don’t be fooled by their slender appearance because these metal rods are designed to carry heavy weights!
In addition, what’s interesting about their setup here is instead of mounting the metal wine racks directly on the main wall, Steve innovated and anchored the wine rods to thick, wooden backing boards. In the art industry, backing boards are installed at the back of the frames to protect or secure the art piece. In this wine cellar, though, Steve used the backing boards to produce a unique lighting display around the wine collection. They’re not obvious upfront, but there are LED lights behind the wooden board since the boards were about 0.5” from the main wall.
The centralmost portion of the wine cellar is a cove area where the owner could pour himself a drink. He doesn’t have to bring the bottle outside and expose it to relatively warm air because he has plenty of space to move around in this new modern wine cellar! As you can see, the owner is really a fan of glass since some of his displays are glass sculptures.
Apart from the ribbon light and the puck lights, Steve also added acrylic LED light panels. This type of wine cellar lighting is an innovation where LED bulbs are sandwiched behind acrylic boards to create a stream of softly diffused light. In this cellar, you can see this lighting on the central wall. It can also be used as a base for wooden shelves!
